Colour

Colour

For this task we had to go out and find as many colours around Bath. I would take the pictures with a SLR and put the colours onto a colour wheel. I did this by using Photoshop. I had to match the pictures I took with the correct colour on the colour wheel.

Primary Colours (standard additive)

The primary colours are Red, Yellow and Blue. These can not be created through mixing of other colours, they are colours in there own right.

                                                                CMYK colour model

The CMYK colours (subtractive primary colours) are Magenta. Cyan, Yellow and Key (Black). These colours can be found in a printer because  they can make any colour. You can see from the colour wheel below by mixing a different amount of each primary colour will produce a colour in between the two primary colours chosen, for example by mixing more yellow then cyan will result in a lighter shade of green.

  Secondary Colours

The secondary colours are Orange, Purple and Green. You achieve these colours by mixing a equal amount of primary colours together (see below for examples).

Tertiary Colours

By mixing primary colours with secondary colours you get the tertiary colours, (as shown above).

                                                                      Warm/Cool Colours

The reason why reds, oranges, yellows and purples are warm colours is because they are colours of fire and the sun. The reason why blues and greens are cool colours is because they are the colours of water and christmas trees.

 Complementary Colours

Complementary colours are colours that can be paired together and can work well. For example, Christmas is red and green because of the holly berry.

Short Film Analysis

We were given a task to make a short film about a topic of our choice. I was in a group of five and we had to come up with an idea about what we could film. We were given a SLR, a tripod (which we didn't use), an audio recorder and a deadline of 2.5 hours. We decided after many failed ideas to make a film about a person rushing to catch a bus.

If I would make this film again and had more time to plan I would film a shot from the top floor stairs looking through the window (see 0:08) down onto the street (see 0:19). I wanted to do this because it shows great distance of the person running away from were he originally started and you can also get better perspective on speed and distance covered.

What I thought worked well is the camera position using an over the shoulder shot while the person is running through the corridors in a hurry, (see 0:54). I like this because it draws the audience in by having a wobbly hand cam effect making it look like your running behind him. This creates lots of tension.

What would've been good is having the camera placed on the bus looking out of the back window filming the person running towards it from the busses point of view, (see 1:13). I like this idea because it shows failure and a closure to the film. Also when you see the person give up the chase you can see the gap between them getting bigger and bigger, (see 1:20).

Identifying Different Shot Types

Start - 0:12
End  - 0:54

I am going to be analysing a scene from 'Pirates of the Caribbean 3 At Worlds End' . I will be looking at different shot types and how they give effect on the audience. I chose this clip because it has a lot of different camera angles in a short space of time.

First off we have a side view of the three main characters (Jack Sparrow, Barbossa and Elizabeth)
walking as the camera follows using dolly tracking shot. All the characters are in focus, so they must of used a sharp aperture opening. All three characters are the main focus. Then in the far distance we see three more characters, so we can only see the legs. Camera pans smoothly to the left as you can still see Jack, Barbossa and Elizabeth walking towards us in the background. Next is a wide shot clearly revealing who the three other characters are. We can see them head to toe in their surroundings and also everything is in perfectly in position, for example, the characters, the boat and buckets. Also I would like to mention that the sand points to the middle character in a triangle shape, this draws your eye to the centre and balances the framing. The next shot I personally like, we have a low angle looking upwards at the three characters walking past, as the camera pans slightly. They did this because if makes them look more powerful and important. Then we have a medium close up panning out to get a nice shot of the three characters. Next we have a medium close up of  Barbossa walking towards us while looking straight into the camera. Then we get a close up of Will Turner as the camera pans to the right. Then it does this for every remaining character, (medium and close ups). Then finally we get a high angle panning down as the three characters move closer.

Adobe Kulur (colour)

Adobe Kulur (colour)

Adobe Kulur is a free piece of software that is very useful for finding colour schemes that work well together. You pick a colour that you want and then it will work out four colours that match your chosen colour, clicking and dragging you can get hundreds of colour schemes.  This can be used in many different professions, such as an interior designer, painter, product designer etc.

White Balance

White Balance

White balance is a process of changing unrealistic colour casts, so that the objects which appear white in person are rendered white in your photo. You can adjust the colour temperature which is useful in filming because you can control how warm and cold the shot is.

Primary and Secondary Research

Primary and Secondary Research

There are two different types of research, primary and secondary. Examples of primary research are, surveys, Interviews, observations and any work carried out by myself. This type of research is beneficial to media practitioners because it's specific, authentic and valid. It gives the designer vital information which he/she can use for marketing and product design.

Here are some examples of secondary research, the internet (wikipedia), text books, magazines, journals, photos and any other research carried out by someone else. This type of research is beneficial to media practitioners because again it can provide data that is useful in all areas, from promotion to the final product. For example colour schemes, font, style, layout and target audience etc.

Example -

I can compare secondary research with primary research to check if my primary research matches theirs. The more research I carry out and the more research I look into the better the outcome.

Self Evaluation (Publishing)

Self Evaluation

I am pleased with my progress within these past 6 weeks. I have learnt more technical words and ways in which the poster is aimed at, for example the four quadrants. I had a lot of knowledge of Photoshop before I did this course. I have done 6 years of Photoshop. I have done Graphics GCSE  and A-Level, Art GCSE and A-Level, GCSE Photography and GCSE Film Studies. So I have a great understanding of creating posters and what they tell. I would like to improve my writing and ways of explaining different information and putting them into a sentence. I am really good at the practical side, but have trouble with the written side of things. If I could do these 6 weeks again I would make sure I save all my work to my personal drive because I have lost work along the way and had to move computers a few times.

Final Design and Evaluation (Publishing)

Final Design and Evaluation (Publishing)

 One Sheet Final Design

My poster is a standard size (one sheet size, 27" × 41). I wanted to follow the typical style and conventions of a film poster. My poster is aimed at the four quadrants and is formal.

I decided to make a mash up poster of two of my favourite shows for my final design. The two shows I chose are 'Doctor Who' and 'Sherlock'. The title I went with is WhoLock, also I decided to use the font from the two shows because they are both Iconic and recognisable. I came up with a clever tag line, "When Two Worlds Collide Anything Can Happen..." This is a quote from Doctor Who and I think it works really well because It is two different shows coming together. I used two images of the the two main characters which I found at a high resolution using Google. One picture had a transparent background and the other was from a professional photo-shoot.

I added the TARDIS in the middle of the two characters because it balances the poster, if it wasn't there it would look empty. It is also a very Iconic. With Sherlock and The Doctor I managed to get the same lighting, colour shades and correct shadows. I did this by using 'Lighting', 'Levels' and 'Colour Balance'. I included a skyline of London because Baker Street is in London and that is where Sherlock Holmes is based. I inverted a white image of the city to black, I did this because I didn't want it to be so busy and I didn't want to draw your eye away from the main focus above.

I made some clouds and mist because I wanted to make it look very cinematic and atmospheric. I did this by using, 'Render - Clouds', 'Overlay' and 'Paint Brush'. I put the clouds on two different layers, one in front and one behind. I did this because I wanted to create more depth and bring the characters forward.

I created stars for the background using 'Add Noise' and 'Levels', I wanted to create a night sky because the TARDIS is taking off into space. It also creates the feeling of the night sky over the London skyline.

I added production information, cast listing and a release date. I did this because It gives the audience the information. When, who, how and it also follows the typical style and convention of a film poster.

Below are some other variations that didn't make the final cut...

If I had to do this project again I would fix the 'eraser' error that I spotted later on after printing. Otherwise I am completely satisfied with my final outcome. I had feedback from other students, such as "Its very well edited!","Very realistic" and "I like the big bold title".

Two students offered advice on ways to improve my poster, such as making the release date brighter and more noticeable. Also someone spotted that the London Eye is slightly out of shape because I compressed the image so that it fits the poster layout. I agree with some of the feedback, although I don't think making the date brighter and more noticeable will have a beneficial result.

Poster Design Process (Publishing)

My Design Process

I was given a task by my teacher to design a movie poster by using original content. The film I chose is the Tree Of Life. I went out with a SLR camera and took a number of different pictures of trees. Then I imported them to Photoshop and began designing the poster.

I have lost the original JPEG I began with so I wasn't able to include it in this blog.

I started with a tree picture and put it in the text by using clipping mask. I did this because it looks professional and stylish. Next I added a black background and the picture of the tree. I lowered its capacity because I wanted the title to stand out more than it did. Then I added some clouds around the edges of the poster to get more depth. I finished of the title by adding, 'The Tree of'. I used the same techniques as I had done before as I wanted to keep the same style. I added cast listings and a coming soon title to promote and advertise the movie, I made sure that the layout was evenly spaced. I did this by clicking and dragging the type. I went with this particular font because it looks very clear and impressive. To finish off I added a lens flare to make it look like the sun was shinning through the tree.

Photoshop Elements and Image Manipulation

Photoshop Elements and Image Manipulation

I'm going to talk about 4 elements in Photoshop which I think are effective. The first one is the 'Magic Wand' tool. I use this tool all the time, it is very useful and handy. The 'Magic Wand' tool is a tool that gets rid of any unwanted space. For example, if you had a picture of someone and wanted to get rid of the white background, you would click on the background and it would automatically high light it, then you would click back space and it disappears. Although this tool is effect, I would rather use the tool called the 'Quick Selection' this tool is a more precise way of getting rid of background space. If I wanted a more accurate way of cutting out unwanted space, this tool is the one.

Another tool I really like using is the 'Clone Stamp' tool. This tool is a really useful tool to use because it can get rid of certain parts of an image. For example, if you had a bird flying in your picture, you would use the Stamp tool to remove it like it wasn't even there. Basically it can remove parts of an image like it wasn't even there before.

The filter called 'Lighting Effects' is a great way of getting the light to shine in different angels and positions. Also you can direct the light source so its focusing on different parts of the image. For example, If you had a dark image which needed to be brightened in a different way, you would use that filter to change the light position and make it more realistic than it actually was.

Two Doctors | Evaluation

Evaluation

I decided to create a clever stop motion video which tells a bit about me. One of my main interests is Doctor Who, so I linked it to that. I had an idea about making a stop motion video by using some Doctor Who figures I own. They would look and talk about my YouTube Channel. I noted down on paper possible ideas and which way the story could go. Which figures? Phone or SLR? Duration?

Then I created a story board which explained what camera angels and what would happen in the video. I drew some quick sketches and wrote some text to show this. Later I then thought of a script, what would the two doctors say? I had to think about what they would actually say in the show, that and I had to try and get their speech right. After I wrote the script I had a greater understanding about what I need to do next, that brought me to filming the actual video.

The start of the video has the TARDIS (the Doctors space ship) landing. I did this by taking a picture of the background, then taking a picture of TARDIS in the background. When I edited this, I faded inwards together the two pictures. This will look like the TARDIS is actually materialising. One thing I had to make saw was, when taking the two pictures it had to be in the exact same position.

I added sound to the video, I recored my own voice and a friends voice, (Matt Smith and David Tennant). I recored with an audio recorder, which I then spoke into with a 25cm distance to get a nice clear sound. Also I took sound effects from the Doctor Who episodes, such as the TARDIS doors opening and closing, footsteps, TARDIS Humming, TARDIS take off and landing sounds and sparks. Also I added two music tracks from Doctor Who and edited them one after the other. The first track I added is called, 'Stormageddon Dark Lord of All'. I added this one because the music suited the atmosphere. Jokey and awkward sounding. The last track I used is called 'The Majestic Tale', this is a well known track from the series. I added this at the end of the video as the TARDIS dematerialised. As for camera angles, I knew what I was looking for because I did GCSE Photography and Film Studies. I used mid shots, close ups, high angles etc.

Overall I am very pleased with the final outcome. I especially like how the TARDIS fades in and out, it looks very smooth looking. Also good music choice which goes well with the scenes and connects with the audience. What I didn't like was how the dialogue is quite hard to hear at the end because the loudness of the music and TARDIS sounds, (1:01).  I also wished I placed the laptop in the middle when the TARDIS takes off at the end, (1:09). If I could improve something for next time I would make the audio balance levelled out at the end, (1:01).

I uploaded it to YouTube and had great feedback from my viewers, such as "This is amazing, for a first attempt at stop motion! Really funny overall too!", "That was a pretty good little piece. Great stop motion movement" etc.  I am pleased with the comments and hope to do more stop motion in the future.

The Silent Film (with added audio)

The Importance of Audio

This is the silent movie me and my team made. We took the film and added sound by recording new sounds to layer over the top. This is called the art of foley. By adding sound we get a greater understanding of the surroundings, it creates emotion, atmosphere, tension and suspense.

We recored sounds of running foot steps, the lift, sitting in a chair, bottle opening etc. All these sounds we re-recored and edited into the video. I edited these certain bits of audio so it sounds like, for example - when Ryan presses the lift button, the edited sound will play at that part, so it sounds like thats the real sound.
