Trailer Storyboard and Planning

   Storyboards/Planning

'Pearlman and Carter'  Comedy Crime Drama

I chose to make a comedy drama about two detectives solving crimes and mysteries. One male, the other female. Examples of shows which do this are, Death in Paradise (BBC) and Doctor Who (BBC). I plan to create a trailer around the 30-50 second mark. The main character (Detective Inspector Pearlman) will have a unique personality, that is socially awkward, comes across funny, most interesting, but also really clever. The other character (Detective Inspector Carter) is the person who gets things back on track and also acts as Perlman's assistant/carer. I am still unsure on what the show can be called (Maybe Pearlman and Carter?).

Thinking about costumes, I had a good idea about what Pearlman could wear. I wanted him to look the part and had that 'unique' feel about him. I wanted people to take him visually seriously, but that doesn't mean people will (comedy element).

A tweed jacket, with a few variants of hoodies and T-shirts because I wanted him to look professional but also quite stylish at the same time. Also black jeans which overlaps onto his boots. As for Carter, she would wear black clothing, like a leather jacket which would also look quite stylish in comparison to Pearlman.

As for shooting footage, a mixture of daylight and darkness would be good because of changing the atmosphere a bit, this will make the scenes a lot more eye grabbing to look at. Lets say 60% of daylight and 40% of night time. By using night time, it will give us a proper mysterious dramatic feel of what solving crimes would be like in the dark, this also sets your own imagination to explore. I want to film some really good atmospheric night time scenes with torches and spooky lighting.  Camera angels I want to include are mid shots, wide shots, over the shoulder shots, close ups, and a low angle. I will really try to make it professional looking, just like a proper BBC One trailer as you would see on TV.

I will record audio with an audio recorder in the moment. But with some scenes I will record audio after filming and sink it over the top until it's perfect. This will be better as recording in a quiet room will work well with no annoying background noises. The sounds I will include will be dialogue, sound effects (car sounds, doors closing, etc), and music, which will be me playing the piano over the top.

Answering Questions on Brief | Audio

Answering Questions on Brief

I have a wide range of using different types of sound, such as music, sound effects and dialogue. Music will be my own as I will create something on the piano, sound effects will be doors opening/closing, car sounds etc, and dialogue will be people talking.

The trailer I am making is fictional based creation because its made up by me and is not real. The audio will support the trailer because it will create meaning and excitement. The music will be uplifting and fun which will follow Pearlman and Carter through their adventures. This will give the audience a sense of reassurance and the feeling - "If their here, everything's going to be ok". By adding sound effects it will make the surroundings a lot more realistic, like a car pulling up will need a engine sound, which I will create, or get from the internet.

The two main characters are Detective Inspector Pearlman and Detective Inspector Carter. The trailer will communicate that these two characters will solve the crimes and the mysterious. By using dialogue it tells us whats happening or what will happen in the story. For example Pearlman needs to introduce himself and Carter - "I'm Detective Inspector Pearlman and this is my assistant, Detective Inspector Carter." This will help because it will instantly click with the audience, that these two characters are the people who will save the day and get the job done. Thats why the audio will help identify the characters to the audience.

Who are your characters? What are you communicating? How will audio help identify them/this to an audience?

Evaluation

Evaluation

For this project I had to create a 'comedy drama'. I decided to make a trailer about two detectives who solve crimes and mysterious. I managed to get the comedy element by having a character who is socially awkward, comes across funny, but also really clever. I wanted Detective Inspector Pearlman to try and act like Detective Inspector Carter but fails really bad, this is where the comedy element comes in (falling over, tripping up, walking into things). The inspiration I got is from this is a BBC show 'Death in Paradise', where you have a male and female lead solving crimes together with that comedy aspect.

I created two versions of the trailer. The second one is all my work, with my own music played on the piano. The first one has the inclusion of the BBC watermark and other effects to make it look like its an official trailer from the BBC. Also an existing music track which is called 'Pompeii' by Bastille (instrumental version). Out of the two versions of the trailer I personally prefer the BBC One version, this is because I much prefer the way it looks with the added watermarks to make it more authentic.

I like the use of camera angles and good quality audio. The trailer was filmed on a DSLR camera and recorded with an audio recorder. We recorded the audio in-between filming and layered it over the top afterwards. We did this because we wanted good quality audio, as we recorded in a quiet room with no background noises. But by doing this it had to sound correct. For example if I was outside talking it would have more echo. So what I did was reverbed the audio to fit its surroundings and to make it sound more realistic. I also did some foley such as closing doors and running, which I would layer over the footage, just like I did with the dialogue. I particularly liked the opening and closing shots because of good lighting, strong focus and framing.

Problems I faced where the weather and the amount daylight. There were several days I wanted to film but was raining, also by the time I got back from college it would be too dark. I kept booking equipment out for roughly about three weeks. There's nothing really standing out that I would change, although editing the audio levels was a challenge, as audio would go loud then quiet. But I think I managed to fix this.

Overall I am very happy with the final outcomes and enjoyed making this fictional trailer come to life.

Evaluation for Board Game

Evaluation for Board Game

I am pleased with the final outcome because I successfully filled the criteria of the brief and stayed within the parameters. The added rules changed the game subtly, but enough to challenge existing players and attract people that haven't played chess before.

The first thing I came up with is the name of the board game, which is 'Prince-Chess'. It sounds catchy and it is a play on words. I though of the name because it sounds like Prince Princess. When I was deigning the logos I decided to keep it simple by using the colour scheme black and white. I did this because it stands out and links to the chess board. I created four different logo designs all using the same colour scheme, in the end I picked design three.

I am very happy with the layout of the packaging. I like how the chess pieces stand out, I achieved this by creating shadow under the playing pieces, a cloud effect layer, and a vibrant yellow which highlights the centre of the board. I am also satisfied with the additional chess pieces, they look traditional yet distinctive.

Overall I am very happy but I would change a couple of things if I would do it again. I would change the base of the princess because it looks rushed and is not symmetrical. Also I would create 3D pieces for the prototype using card board templates. If I had more time I would of created the box. Finally the contrast of the two (central) chess pieces on the main cover is off. I would of liked to have tested the game with more people to have gotten more feedback as well as my questionnaire, this would of helped my reflecting and evaluating process.

Board Game Prototype

Board Game Prototype

Prototype of Prince-Chess can be found in a polly pocket in the media office.

Prince-Chess is a game played between two opponents on opposite sides of a board containing 81 squares of alternating colours. Each player has 18 pieces: 1 King, 1 Queen, 1 Prince/Princess, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, and 9 Pawns. The goal of the game is to checkmate the other king.

The King moves exactly one square horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

The Queen moves any number of squares in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal direction.

The Prince/Princess can move the same as the King, with one exception. If you take one of the opponents pieces you can choose to bring back one of yours of the same value (Pawns and specials) and these start on the original square.

The Rook moves any number of squares in a horizontal or vertical direction.

The Bishop moves any number of squares in any diagonal direction.

A Knight moves in a "L" pattern. The knight is not blocked by other piece, it can jump to the new location.

The Pawns move straight forward one square. If it has not yet moved. a pawn also has the option of moving two squares straight forward. Pawns can not move backwards. A pawn can capture an enemy piece by taking on a diagonal. If you get one of your pawns to the other side, you get to swap your pawn with one of your choice.

Board Game Production

 Board Game Production

                 Reflection of the Brief

I think that Its going to be a tough journey because I think that to create a game from                            scratch is going to be difficult. The requirements and parameters are that it doesn't exceed international paper size A3. Games should include traditional elements such as playing cards. Games must have a clear product identity (good name, logo, colour scheme, visual style, etc). Games must have a clear target audience. Games must not be harmful or hazardous in any way.  I have until the 30th of November to complete all of this. I think Im going to use photoshop to do the logo and packaging and a word processing program to type out the rules.

  Research Statement

I couldn't think of an original concept for a board game, so I'm going to customise the rules of chess and possibly add an extra piece. At the moment I'm not sure how this piece would move around the board, so I am going to use a test audience to try out different rules over the next couple of weeks. I have a few ideas for logos but I'm going to research different logos and colour schemes of other board games. I will do this by looking on the internet and also to look around toy shops so I can see what they look like. I am not sure what the extra piece will look like, and how I am going to design this so it stands out. Its been a few years since I played chess, so I will have to refresh my memory on how to play the rules.

Timeline Animate

Timeline Animate

You use the timeline to move images, edit clips and bring things to life. The layers are really important because thats how you overlap things and animate objects. It can include frame by frame animation, tweened animation and motion paths. To create a key frame you have to draw something and select it, then you can animate. The more frames you add the more smoother it will be. Doing this you can decide weather or not to use the onion skinning technique. I prefer this way of animating than the dreaded 'bone tool'.

Creating a Character

Creating Colin
This is my creation, he is called Colin. He is the most stylish Robin on the Planet (he thinks so). He chooses to wear his big boots, because flying is not his style, flying is so common.

Recce | On location

Recce

Today we went off to find a good filming location for a period drama/sci-fi. We had to think about lighting/weather, permission, accessibility etc.

Lorry access would be tricky but is possible. You would have to get special permission to park on there property. There is plenty of room to set up sanitation, catering and first aid, along with all the filming/sound equipment.

The sun will rise in the east and set in the west. So, at this point in time (November) the best shot of the Crescent would be around 2:00pm because it will be lit up by the sunlight.

The big problem you would have is all the cars and the public. You would have to get permission to close the road off and ask people to move there cars.

Peer Assessment

Peer Assessment

I played the board game 'Purge', I found it enjoyable because of the way it looks, and also the way it plays. I found it aesthetically pleasing because of the colour schemes, which are reds and greens (complementary colours), a clear layout and a simple design. The logo stands out because of the bright red, this makes it look like its written in blood, this also gives you a feel of what its going to be like when playing - violent and graphic. The rule sheet was clear and colourful, and had a simple layout that gave the information across nicely. A rule that I thought would be a good addition is that when you get into a fight with another player, instead of just using the cards you acquire it would be interesting to add a dice role to give the other player a chance and also another element of luck.

The game has a nice pace and is fun to play, although there are two things I would change. First of all there should be fewer death cards and a wider range of weapons and secondly I believe the age rating is too low because of all the violence and blood, so because of this I would make it a 15+.

This board game stuck to the international paper size A3, it also included traditional elements such as playing pieces, a clear set of rules and a working board. It has a clear product identity and a visual style. The game wasn't hazardous in any way, apart from the target audience range started too low. Overall I thought it was enjoyable, well done purge team!

Monopoly

Monopoly (Diversified)

Monopoly is a game about money, where players move around the board buying or trading properties, also the aim of the game is to bankrupt the other players. Monopoly have diversified globally to unsure that their products stays relevant. By them doing this they are creating new ways of incorporating movie franchises, TV shows and video games.

For example

Star Wars, Minions, Pokemon, Frozen, Assassins Creed, Doctor Who, etc.

180 Degree Rule

180 Degree Rule

We were set a task to make a short clip deliberately breaking the 180 degree rule.

The 180° rule is a camera shot guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another . When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle.

Doctor Strange: Linear Narrative

1) Act One - Stephen Strange loses the use of his hands in a car accident.

2) Act Two - Stephen Strange learns and practices his special abilities.

3) Act Three - Doctor Strange becomes more powerful and the cape finds him.

Media Studies Short Film

Today in class we had to create a shot movie which included the following camera shots -

The shot types I used in order :

Wide Shot
Medium Shot
Over the Shoulder
Close up
Extreme Close up

I used a wide shot at the start because I wanted it to set the scene with its surroundings. I used a over the shoulder shot because It felt like your part of the conversation. Also I used a close up because I wanted to show the emotion on the characters face especially on a extreme close up. I also used a mid shot, I used this because I wanted it to feel like your interacting with the two characters on the table.

Andrex Advert Analysis

The advert I chose to analysis is a Andrex Toilet roll advertisement. We've got a few camera  such as, a wide shot (0:01), birds eye (0:06), panning (0:10), etc. Basically the puppies run into a nicely stacked up tower of toilet roll and play/run with them. They use puppies because they are soft and cuddly just like the toilet role. This would make you want to buy it.

They used these camera angels because they wanted to set the scene in the environment. The music is catchy and creates a happy feel, also there are vocals in the music, but is only noticeable when the woman stops speaking over the top. They did this to make it less crowded and because you don't want two people talking at the same time. The target audience is for the four quadrants, but the toilet roll comes with a free puppy toy, which will make the kids want it more. The colours used in this video are very dull and basic, browns, whites and greys. Also the puppies are the same colour as the floor because they wanted to make the white toilet roll to be the main focus. Then at the end of the video we see some colour of the toilet roll in its packaging, blues and yellows. But this was added in later because you can tell its fake by its brightness and shadow. It looks very convincing because its got the correct use of refection which shines on the wooden floor. Also is shows a web address underneath this and a logo, this is for more information and to look into the product in depth.

Rationale for Prince Chess

Rationale for Prince Chess

I decided to put a twist on the classic game of chess. We added a new chess piece for each side, on the black side we had a prince, and on the white side we had a princess. We didn't want to change the rules to much because we wanted people who already play to continue playing are version, but also we wanted to attract a new audience. We decided to stick with the original black and white colour scheme because its iconic and stands out.

There are many levels of skill that this game can be played at. It can be enjoyed by younger audiences or older players with years of experience.  The new playing piece changes the dynamic of the game in both attack and defence and follows the classic design and style of the other pieces.

If you liked normal traditional chess, then you're gonna love this even more. This is not a game of luck, this is a game of skill, patience and planning.

Animal Animation Basics

I drew the Cat with a black paint brush on Adobe Animate.
Here I used a basic 'Bone Tool' to animate the Cat.

Animation Thoughts

Animation Thoughts

I liked the animation because it looked very smooth and simple. It gave us an understanding of how the pyramid scheme works. This business model is very misleading, you get very little gain from what you actually put in. Here are some examples of famous pyramid scheme:-
Avon Products, Herbalife, Juice Plus, Kleeneze, etc.

The Production Progress

The Production Progress

Every film starts of with an idea. The writers would start of with a storyline. This would be part of pre-production, as its all about planning. Producers would need to plan and look into cast/crew, money, locations, deadlines, etc. Next would be production. You would need actors, a script, camera/equipment, accommodation, etc. This would be the part of the actual filming progress.
You would need people to edit the film together and create sound. This would be post-production as this would be the last part of the film process. Examples such as foley, special effects, marketing.

The Executive producer is top of the list because they oversee the filmmaking. Then we have a producer, they are responsible for the managerial parts of making the film. The director directs people to make the film and is up to him/her to make saw everyone's doing the right thing.
Then it leads to several departments as shown on the organisation tree. Such as editing, music, sound, photography and art.

Who does what? Job Title and Roles

Executive Producer - The Bank.
Director - In control, Leader. Directs people on screen.
Producer- Makes the film happen. Funding
Writer - Comes up with the story.
Production Manager - Control things off camera, behind the scenes.
Production Coordinator - They organise the administration and secretarial duties.
Camera crew - Deal with the equipment with the camera.
Sound Engineers - Deal with sound, Microphones, audio levels.
Location Manager - Decides where the film will be shot.
Extras - People who are in the background, or with very little speaking parts.
Editor's - cuts up and arranges the film using various software.
Assistant Editor - They maintain editing systems, responsible for the smooth running of the cutting room.
Composer - Creates the soundtrack/score
Make up Artists - Make people look perfect and correct.
Foley - sound done after filming, which gets added on later.
Costume Manager - Decides who makes which costume.
Costume Designers - Designs and creates the clothing
Security - Makes sure everything's under control and safe.
Drivers - Gets everyone and the equipment needed to the destination on  time.
Chefs/catering - Cooks the food so people can get through the day.
Runners - Get specific jobs to do to help out the crew, good starting job.
Electrician - Tests and sets up electronics on set.
First Aid - Health and Safety
Stuntmen - People who don't mind getting hit, punched, falling, jumping off roofs etc, (Dangerous stuff)
Pyro-technician - The person who deals with explosions, fire, sparks.
Doubles - People who look like the famous people in the production.
Actors - People who star in the film/tv show.
Assistant Managers - Provides support to the location manager, deals with logistics on location
Casting Manager - they work closely with both director and producer to assemble the perfect cast for the film.
Boom operator - they operate lifts so that lighting can be raised.

A Shell For Christmas | Short Stopmotion Film

In class today we had to create a short movie to do with light. Me and Ben chose the theme of Christmas. The story is about a lost snail who is decorating his Christmas Tree (his rock). First he decorates the rock with red, green and white lights, then he comes back with two presents and finally he puts the yellow star on top to complete the tree. Then we decided to make the film a little bit more longer, so we added a purple snail. He would steal one of the presents and run away with it. The Orange snail would run after it and get it back. The the highlight of the film is at the end when the snail opens the present and reveals a brand new snail shell. He sticks it on and runs of camera.

What I partically liked is how I managed to change the snails facial expressions in certain parts. Example of this would be when the purple snail steals one of the presents, the orange snail makes a sad face. If I could change anything it would be the speed of the film, I find its a little to fast for my liking. Also at the end, I would make the orange snail with his new shell a bit more longer, so the audience can realise what he has just opened.

Stop Motion

Stop Motion

In class today we watched a short film about what stop motion is and the styles, benefits and difficulties of working with stop motion. I particularly liked the short clip about the man made of string on the boat and the use of fabrics to create the ocean. The man looked sad and troubled because of the colours used which were generally dull and bleak.

The difference between American and British stop motion is that American is more drawing based like disney, and British is based more around clay and models, like Walace and Gromit.

Colour

Colour

For this task we had to go out and find as many colours around Bath. I would take the pictures with a SLR and put the colours onto a colour wheel. I did this by using Photoshop. I had to match the pictures I took with the correct colour on the colour wheel.

Primary Colours (standard additive)

The primary colours are Red, Yellow and Blue. These can not be created through mixing of other colours, they are colours in there own right.

                                                                CMYK colour model

The CMYK colours (subtractive primary colours) are Magenta. Cyan, Yellow and Key (Black). These colours can be found in a printer because  they can make any colour. You can see from the colour wheel below by mixing a different amount of each primary colour will produce a colour in between the two primary colours chosen, for example by mixing more yellow then cyan will result in a lighter shade of green.

  Secondary Colours

The secondary colours are Orange, Purple and Green. You achieve these colours by mixing a equal amount of primary colours together (see below for examples).

Tertiary Colours

By mixing primary colours with secondary colours you get the tertiary colours, (as shown above).

                                                                      Warm/Cool Colours

The reason why reds, oranges, yellows and purples are warm colours is because they are colours of fire and the sun. The reason why blues and greens are cool colours is because they are the colours of water and christmas trees.

 Complementary Colours

Complementary colours are colours that can be paired together and can work well. For example, Christmas is red and green because of the holly berry.
